Why counters sometimes disagree
This counter splits words at whitespace, so a hyphenated term without spaces is one word. Characters are Unicode code points, not visible glyphs or UTF-16 code units. An accented character written as a letter plus a combining mark counts differently from a precomposed letter. Blank lines separate paragraphs.
Frequently asked questions
Is the reading time exact?
No. It assumes 200 words per minute and rounds for display. Technical content, language and individual reading speed change the actual time.
Why does a family emoji count as several characters?
Some visible emoji combine multiple code points using joiners and modifiers. The character total counts those code points. A platform's length limit may use a different rule.
Can I clean text before counting it?
