Understanding your pay
A full-time year is 2,080 hours (40 hours × 52 weeks), so doubling an hourly rate approximates the annual salary in thousands: $25/hour is about $50k. A year has 52 weekly or 26 biweekly paychecks but only 12 months, so a month of pay is a little more than four weeks of pay. All standard pay figures are gross. Income tax, retirement contributions and other deductions come out first, and typically leave 60–80% as take-home pay.
When comparing a salaried offer to hourly work, count the paid vacation and benefits a salary includes, and the overtime it usually excludes. When judging a raise, compare it to inflation and to your market rate. When setting a freelance rate, do not divide a salary by 2,080. Freelancers bill far fewer hours and carry costs employees never see. The freelance rate calculator accounts for both.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert an annual salary to an hourly rate?
Divide the salary by your yearly working hours. A standard 40-hour week across 52 paid weeks is 2,080 hours, so $62,400 ÷ 2,080 = $30/hour. The salary to hourly calculator also shows daily, weekly and monthly figures.
Are these figures before or after tax?
Before tax. Job offers, contracts and pay negotiations use gross figures, so these calculators do too. Take-home pay depends on your country's tax rules and your circumstances.
What is time and a half?
An overtime rate of 1.5× your regular hourly wage. $20/hour becomes $30/hour for overtime hours. In the US it is the federal minimum overtime rate for non-exempt employees beyond 40 hours a week. Elsewhere the rate is set by contract or industry award.
