Salary to Hourly Calculator
This calculator converts an annual salary into an hourly wage, plus the matching daily, weekly, biweekly and monthly figures. Use it to compare a salaried offer against hourly work or to check a contract rate.
Enter your gross annual salary (before tax), your typical weekly hours, and the weeks you work per year. If your vacation is paid, leave the weeks at 52, because you are paid for those weeks either way.
How salary is converted to an hourly wage
Divide your yearly pay by the hours you work in a year:
Hourly wage = Annual salary ÷ (Hours per week × Weeks per year)
At 40 hours per week and 52 weeks per year, a year has 2,080 working hours. A quick shortcut: divide the salary in thousands by 2. A $60,000 salary is about $30 per hour (the exact answer is $28.85).
The daily figure assumes your weekly hours are spread over five days. The biweekly figure is two weeks of pay, the schedule most US employers use.
Worked example
You earn $52,000 per year and work a 40-hour week for all 52 weeks:
| Hours per year | 40 × 52 = 2,080 |
|---|---|
| Hourly wage | $52,000 ÷ 2,080 = $25.00 |
| Weekly | $1,000.00 |
| Biweekly | $2,000.00 |
| Monthly | $4,333.33 |
If the same person worked 48-hour weeks, the hourly rate would fall to $52,000 ÷ 2,496 = $20.83. That is a useful check when a salaried role expects long hours.
Tips for comparing salaried and hourly jobs
Salaried roles usually include paid vacation, sick leave and holidays. Hourly roles often pay only for hours worked, but usually qualify for overtime, which salaried "exempt" roles do not. If you expect regular overtime, see what it is worth with the overtime pay calculator.
Also compare benefits with a real cash value. Employer retirement contributions, health cover and bonuses can add 10–30% to total compensation. These are gross figures, so tax and other deductions come out before pay reaches your account.
Frequently asked questions
How many working hours are in a year?
A standard full-time year is 2,080 hours (40 hours × 52 weeks). Subtract two weeks of unpaid time off and it becomes 2,000 hours, which is why some people simply divide the annual salary by 2,000.
What is $50,000 a year per hour?
$50,000 per year is $24.04 per hour at 40 hours a week for 52 weeks ($50,000 ÷ 2,080). At 37.5 hours per week, common in the UK, Canada and office roles, it is $25.64 per hour.
Should I use gross or take-home salary?
Use gross (pre-tax) salary. Hourly rates in job adverts and contracts are quoted gross, so converting your gross salary keeps the comparison fair. Take-home pay depends on your tax situation and deductions.
Do paid vacation weeks count in the calculation?
Yes. If your vacation is paid, keep weeks per year at 52, because your salary covers those weeks. Only reduce the weeks for unpaid time off, which is more common for contractors and hourly workers.
