US, UK and metric measures in the kitchen
Recipes are where volume confusion happens most. A US cup is 236.6 mL, a metric cup (used in Australia, New Zealand and India) is 250 mL, and older UK recipes use the 284 mL imperial half-pint. A US fluid ounce is 29.57 mL, a UK one 28.41 mL. A US pint is 473 mL but a UK pint is 568 mL, which is why a British pint of beer is larger. For baking, the safest route is to convert everything to milliliters or, better, to weigh dry ingredients in grams.
How much a volume of liquid weighs depends on its density. A liter of water is 1 kg and a US gallon of water is 3.785 kg (8.34 lb), but oil, milk and fuel differ. The gallon to kg and liter to kg pages handle that.

Is a cubic meter the same as 1,000 liters?
Yes. A liter is one cubic decimeter, so a cubic meter (1,000 cubic decimeters) holds exactly 1,000 liters. Water bills measured in kiloliters or cubic meters mean the same thing.
