Kg to Liter Converter (kilograms to liters)
Kilograms measure mass and liters measure volume, so converting between them needs the density of the substance. For water the answer is simple: 1 kg = 1 liter. For anything else, pick the substance above (milk, cooking oil, petrol, honey, flour, rice and more) or type a density in kg per liter, and the converter does the rest in both directions.
1 kilogram of water = 1 liter (density 1 kg/L). Volume = mass ÷ density, mass = volume × density.
How to convert kg to liters
Liters = kilograms ÷ density (kg/L)
Density is how many kilograms one liter of the material weighs. Water is 1 kg/L, so kilograms and liters are equal. Cooking oil is about 0.92 kg/L, so 1 kg of oil is 1 ÷ 0.92 = 1.087 liters. Honey is 1.42 kg/L, so 1 kg of honey is only 0.704 liters. For the reverse, multiply liters by density to get kilograms. Densities vary a little with temperature and brand; the values here are typical room-temperature figures.

Kg to liter, ton, meter and other mixed searches
Kg to liter of milk: milk is slightly denser than water at about 1.03 kg/L, so 1 kg of milk is 0.971 liters and a 1-liter packet weighs 1.03 kg. Kg to liter of petrol or diesel: fuels are lighter than water, so 1 kg of petrol is 1.35 liters and 1 kg of diesel is 1.2 liters. Dry goods like flour and rice are given as bulk density, which depends on how tightly they are packed; use them for shopping and cooking estimates, not for engineering.
Related searches with a different answer: kg to ton (1,000 kg = 1 metric ton), kg to newton (multiply by 9.80665) and kg to meter, which has no general answer because it would need the material's density and its cross-section. For gallons, see gallon to kg.
Frequently asked questions
Is 1 kg equal to 1 liter?
Only for water (and liquids of similar density). A liter of water weighs 1 kg at 4 °C and 0.998 kg at room temperature, close enough to treat as equal. Oil, fuel, milk, honey and dry goods all differ.
How many liters is 1 kg of oil?
About 1.09 liters for cooking oil (density 0.92 kg/L). A 1-liter bottle of oil weighs roughly 920 g.
How many liters is 1 kg of milk?
About 0.97 liters, since milk's density is 1.03 kg/L. A 1-liter packet of milk weighs about 1.03 kg.
How do I convert kg to liters for a substance not listed?
Choose Custom density and type the density in kg/L (the same as g/mL or tonnes per cubic meter). If you only know pounds per gallon, divide by 8.345 to get kg/L.
