How to use it

Drag in the saturation and brightness square, move the hue strip, choose a chart swatch or enter RGB values from 0 to 255. You can also type a three- or six-digit hex color. Copy hex, RGB or HSL with one click.

Useful example

RGB 11, 95, 165 produces #0B5FA5, the blue used for links throughout Mathmatives.

Three formats for the same screen color

RGB uses three channels from 0 to 255. HEX writes those channels in base 16: RGB(255, 128, 0) is #FF8000. HSL describes hue, saturation and lightness; the same orange is approximately hsl(30, 100%, 50%). Display rounding can make an HSL round trip differ by a channel value.

Frequently asked questions

Can I enter a short hex code?

Yes. #F80 expands to #FF8800 by repeating each digit. Enter three or six hex digits, with or without #. Alpha-channel hex values are not supported here.

Is the picker brightness value the same as HSL lightness?

No. The picker square uses saturation and value (HSV). The copied HSL value is converted separately; HSV value and HSL lightness use different definitions.

Will the color look identical in print?

No. These are screen color codes. Displays, color profiles, paper and ink affect appearance. This tool does not perform print-profile or CMYK conversion.
