Higher is better, or lower is better

Mpg and km/L rise as a car gets more efficient. L/100 km falls. That makes comparisons across regions confusing: a 40 mpg (US) car uses 5.88 L/100 km, which is 17 km/L, and 48 mpg (UK) because the imperial gallon is 20% larger. Electric cars use a different measure entirely (kWh per 100 km or miles per kWh), and hybrids' official figures depend heavily on the test cycle, so treat published numbers as comparable within one region only.

Why are UK mpg figures higher than US ones for the same car?

The imperial gallon is 4.546 liters against 3.785 for the US gallon, so the same car travels 20% further per UK gallon. 40 mpg (US) is 48 mpg (UK).

What is a good fuel economy?

For a petrol car, under 6 L/100 km (over 39 mpg US, over 16 km/L) is efficient; over 10 L/100 km (under 24 mpg US) is thirsty. Diesel and hybrid cars generally do better.
